Our client, an RTP area biotech that is developing cutting-edge technology to guide precision therapy for cancer patients, is actively recruiting for a very sharp, knowledgeable and business-savvy candidate to assume its Director of Accounting role.

This company, supported by investments from top precision medicine companies, is transforming cancer care in diagnostics.  Its technology uses patient-derived samples (biopsies) for rapid therapeutic profiling, enabling oncologists to pinpoint optimal treatment plans for patients. The technology is also being used in drug development. It is exciting, paradigm-shifting work.

This Director of Accounting will lead all accounting functions, which will involve management of routine, day-to-day financial matters as well as complex, high-risk, high-profile transactions.

Key Things to Note:

  • This is a critical leadership role.  This Director will report to the VP of Finance, have regular communications with executives and VC partners, lead all technical accounting efforts and bring accounting expertise to key business discussions.  We seek a highly skilled technical accountant (CPA expected), with broad exposure as well as the demonstrated ability to explain GAAP accounting treatment to other business leaders.
  • This Director will supervise a small team, which is expected to grow.  Seek Director who is prepared to be hands-on in managing day-to-day functions such as AP, AR, GL, etc.
  • This is a research-heavy environment. Ideal candidate will have some experience working with researchers and lab operations.  Biotech preferred.
  • The company produces equipment and consumables.  Experience with inventory, manufacturing and/or cost accounting will be important.
  • This is an emerging company in which processes, procedures, and protocols are still being developed and/or enhanced. Seek process improvement-oriented candidate who will pursue Best Practice operations while working through the ambiguity and dynamics that are inherent to entrepreneurial settings.

Selected Responsibilities:

  • Oversee accounting team (currently one person) performing accounting functions including:
    • Payroll (company uses ADP)
    • Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable
    • Concur expense reporting
    • Preparation and review of journal entries
    • Account reconciliations
  • Train and mentor accounting staff; prioritize their development
  • Organize and manage monthly, quarterly, and annual close process and overall execution of accounting timelines to ensure a timely close
  • Consolidation of foreign subsidiary
  • Research complex accounting issues (leases, rev rec, foreign exchange, stock issuances, etc.) and implement procedures that ensure that transactions are properly recorded under U.S. GAAP
  • Act as liaison with outside auditors, VC partners, etc.  Ensure work papers and financial reporting requirements are prepared accurately and timely
  • Collaborate with finance partner to ensure GAAP compliance, improve month-end processes and fully utilize capabilities of ERP (NetSuite) system to deliver financial compliance

Targeted candidate will offer a BS/BA in Accounting or Finance and 10+ years of directly related accounting experience.  CPA is strongly preferred.  Public Accounting bkgd and biotech exposure both desired.
