Our client, an RTP area pharmaceutical company with several approved products and several products in development, is actively recruiting for a sharp and capable Formulations Scientist to join its R&D Team. 

This company specializes in small molecule ophthalmic drug delivery dosage forms.  The Formulation Scientist will develop and characterize extended-release drug delivery formulations.  Responsibilities will include material selection, experimental design, drug compatibility assessment, planning and execution of experiments. 

This is a lab-based position, with 50% of the time spent on laboratory experiments and 50% of the time spent researching.  The position will involve supporting pre-clinical and early-stage development of extended-release clinical formulations. 

We seek a candidate who enjoys the lab, one who enjoys research, one who is an astute problem solver who will use superb judgment regarding documentation and handling/escalating exceptions, discrepancies, etc. 

Specific duties:

  • Designs and executes experiments independently and peer reviews others work.  Provides meaningful input / guidance to others experimental design.
  • Pre-formulation development, screening new chemical entities and formulations to solve solubility, stability, and drug delivery challenges. 
  • Development and physicochemical characterization of drug delivery formulations, with a focus on ophthalmic dosage forms
  • Development of small-scale in-vitro screening techniques to predict formulation performance
  • Support discovery team with enabling formulations, and generation of experimental supplies for early-stage studies.  Formulation iteration and optimization based on in vivo performance
  • Independent research, experimental design, execution, and troubleshooting
  • Conduct process development and optimization on assigned projects
  • Data analysis and written and oral presentation of results

Targeted candidate will offer an advanced degree (PhD or MS), with 2-5+ years of experience in drug delivery, release formulations, particulate based drug delivery, extended-release formulations and/or devices, and/or polymer hydrogel systems in the pharmaceutical industry.

Other priorities include:

  • Experience in topical ophthalmic formulation development, particulate based drug delivery, or extended drug delivery systems preferred
  • Ocular drug delivery background with experience formulating ophthalmic products is a plus
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent documentation skills.
  • Collaborative work style including ability to engage cross functional partners to find solutions to challenges
