Project/Structural Engineer (Inspections/Design) – Wilmington, NC (Will Relo)
Our client, a rapidly expanding structural engineering firm that has established an outstanding reputation for quality and service, is opening its first Wilmington office and actively recruiting for an exceptional candidate to join its Client Services team.
The firm is considering both local candidates and those who are interested in relocating to Wilmington. It is an important role, and compensation will be generous.
Key Things to Note:
- This Engineer will be part of a small team that is launching the Wilmington, NC office. Seek candidate who will thrive in a building, entrepreneurial setting.
- The firm specializes in low- to mid-rise residential and commercial projects. Some experience with wood inspection/design will be important.
- The Project Engineer will be a customer-facing engineer who will perform forensic inspections of existing structures and root cause analysis as well as specify functional repairs. Strong inspections bkgd, including the ability to offer technically-sound solutions to identified issues, will be critical. Some experience in design would be a plus.
- Client is somewhat open on level, considering both junior level engineers (EI) and experienced engineers (PE). They are building a team. The priority is performance excellence and potential.
- The position will be on-site at the firm’s Wilmington, NC offices. Initial training period will be in Raleigh. Firm will cover travel/housing costs.
Selected Responsibilities:
- Perform field inspections similar to the following examples:
- Drywall cracks/ uneven or deterioration of floors on 1-story house that is < 3,000 SF
- Localized damage from disastrous events (tree impacts, car impacts, fires, etc.)
- Decks
- Unpermitted screen porch
- Broken roof truss/modified roof truss
- Wall removal for ranch house
- Analyze structures using various structural engineering software including Enercalc, RetainPro, and RISA 2D.
- Calculate structural loads per the NC Building Code, IBC, and other codes as required
- Successfully manage client questions in real-time consultation situations.
- Develop high quality client deliverables within committed turnaround times.
- Support ongoing projects by analyzing proposed construction alternatives, responding to RFIs, and clearly communicating options to contractors.
- Continually improve design materials, spreadsheets, standard operating procedures, etc..
- Strategically and professionally represent firm in client engagement meetings both in-person, over the phone, and via email.
Targeted candidate will offer a BS or MS in Engineering and 2+ years of experience in inspection/structural work, including wood structures. PE license or EI certification (depending on level) is required.
Other priorities include:
- Substantial experience performing inspections similar to the examples cited above
- Outstanding project management and time management skills, including the ability to successfully juggle a high volume of complex projects
- Excellent writing skills, including the ability to prepare professional, accurate and comprehensive inspection reports
- Strong verbal communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to foster productive and respectful relationships with both clients and colleagues
- Knowledge of drafting software (AutoCAD or similar); structural calculation software (Enercalc and RetainPro or similar); and structural modeling software (RISA 2D/3D or similar)
- Track record of achievement
